JACKSON, Wy. – Nashville’s Jenny Tolman is honored to be invited by the family and friends of American hero Lance Cpl. Rylee McCollum to perform at his memorial service Saturday, Oct. 23 in McCollum’s hometown of Jackson, Wyoming. At the family’s request, Tolman will sing “Lonely in the Lone Star” a song with lyrics that paint an all too familiar picture for the McCollum family.

McCollum, a 20-year-old U.S. Marine, died along with 12 other U.S. service members on Aug. 26 during a suicide bombing and gun attack, which occurred during evacuation efforts at Hamid Karzai International Airport in Kabul, Afghanistan. His wife, Jiennah, recently welcomed their baby daughter, Levi Rylee Rose McCollum.

The day of the memorial, Saturday, October 23, Tolman will make available “Lonely in the Lone Star” on all digital music platforms, with 100% of the song’s proceeds going to Heroes Never Forgotten, A Gold Star Tribute for the Celebration of Life.” The fund supports all 13 Gold Star families who lost loved ones in the Kabul bombing.

“Lonely in the Lone Star”
(Dave Brainard, Jenny Tolman, Bill Whyte)

There’s no shooting stars over San Antone
At least none that are worth wishing on
Got a stack of letters and the full moon as a reading light
Sure is lonely in the lone star tonight

There’s a picture on our wall, they took of you at Lackland
And my old phone number you wrote on a Rosario’s napkin
This ole quarter karat’s still shining bright
Sure is lonely in the lone star tonight
This heavy heart, I’m on my knees with it
There’s no prayer I know to make peace with it

All the some days, the dreams, yeah the life we planned
Wasn’t meant to include Afghanistan
Now That yellow ribbon is nearly faded white
Sure is lonely in the lone star tonight

What I swore, that day, was you, knocking at the door
Was just three men in uniform
Saying something about honor and sacrifice
Sure is lonely in the lone star tonight

This heavy heart, I’m on my knees with it
There’s no prayer I know to make peace with it

There’s no shooting stars over San Antone
At least none that are worth wishing on
Just a folded flag in the full moon light
Sure is lonely in the lone star tonight

ABOUT JENNY TOLMAN:
With a razor-sharp wit and throwback sound, Jenny Tolman is on deck to become her generation’s Roger Miller—a comedic troubadour with a decidedly feminine perspective, offering savvy wordplay and wisdom far beyond her years. With titles like “High Class White Trash,” her debut album There Goes the Neighborhood lit up Nashville in 2020 by delivering engaging snapshots of small-town life in the fictional Jennyville. Not many new artists would step into the spotlight quite so brazenly but doing so has been worth the gamble thus far for Tolman, with the Nashville Scene singling out There Goes the Neighborhood as “Best Country Debut Album,” while The Tennessean named her an “Artist to Watch” and MusicRow Magazine included her in its “Next Big Thing” Class of 2020. Pretty heady stuff for a 25-year-old whom veteran Music Row writer Robert K. Oermann says is “practically single-handedly bringing humor back into country music.”
