LOS ANGELES — Dennis Quaid’s “Reagan” shot past all competitors at the box office on Tuesday claiming the #1 spot on a per screen average basis. The numbers have caused the film’s distributor Showbiz Direct to add new locations in week two.
“Reagan” had stunned industry observers by doubling its predicted $5m in its opening frame, raking in $10.3m.
“We are thrilled to have the #1 highest per screen average yesterday, noted Kevin Mitchell, founder of the newly launched Showbiz Direct. “Thanks to the fans of this movie for turning out, we will be adding new theaters for our second week.”
Moviegoers gave the film an A CinemaScore and a 98% on Rotten Tomatoes’ Popcornmeter in sharp contrast to RT’s critics score which stood at 22%. That 76% chasm makes it the film with the greatest gap between critics and fans in the history of Hollywood theatrical films, surpassing the previous record of 65% held by “The Boondock Saints.”
Set against the backdrop of the Cold War, “REAGAN” follows Ronald Reagan from his dusty small-town roots to the glitter of Hollywood, and then on to commanding the world stage. “REAGAN” is directed by Sean McNamara (“Soul Surfer,” “Miracle Season”) and written by Howard Klausner who penned “Space Cowboys” for Clint Eastwood.
