NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Fresh off the historic celebration of Whisperin’ Bill Anderson’s 65th anniversary as the longest-serving member in the history of the Grand Ole Opry, another remarkable milestone is being celebrated behind the scenes.
This year marks 25 years since Lee Willard began his journey alongside the Country Music Hall of Famer, a partnership that has become one of the longest and most successful artist-manager relationships in country music.
Willard’s path to Nashville began far from Music City. At just 17 years old, he landed his first broadcasting job as the on-air personality “Willard the Street Urchin” at 101.3 WMCI in Mattoon, Illinois. He credits longtime Program Director Bub McCullough with giving a young kid a life-changing opportunity that ultimately altered the course of his career.
“Bub took a chance on a 17-year-old kid who simply loved country music,” Willard said. “Without that opportunity, none of this would have happened.”
A few years later, fate intervened.
“Bill was looking for a new tour manager and was given my number by a mutual friend, Donny Michael,” Willard recalled. “After several conversations, Bill invited me to ride the bus for a few shows to see if we were a good fit.”
The chemistry was immediate.
Within months, the 22-year-old packed his belongings and moved to Nashville to become Anderson’s tour manager. Just two years later, Willard was named Anderson’s full-time manager—a role he has held ever since while helping guide one of country music’s most celebrated and enduring careers.
Over the past quarter-century, Willard has overseen countless career milestones, recordings, television appearances, tours, industry honors, and historic moments, including Anderson’s continued legacy as the longest-serving member of the Grand Ole Opry.
The celebration of Willard’s 25-year milestone comes during another landmark chapter in Anderson’s legendary career. Following his historic 65th anniversary as the longest-serving member of the Grand Ole Opry, Anderson will be honored on August 19 with the Academy of Country Music’s prestigious ACM Icon Award, recognizing his profound contributions to advancing the popularity and stature of country music. The honor further cements Anderson’s place among the most influential and enduring figures in the history of the genre.
“Bill and I have developed a bond that couldn’t be considered anything less than family,” Willard said. “We’ve ridden the highest of career highs and the lowest of personal lows together. Twenty-five years have gone by in the blink of an eye, and I couldn’t be more grateful for every mile, every show, and every memory we’ve shared. I’ve been blessed and honored to have a front-row seat to one of the most iconic careers in music history. It’s a privilege I’ll never take for granted.”
The partnership shows no signs of slowing down.
Willard is currently co-producing Bright Lights and Country Music: The Unprecedented Life and Career of Whisperin’ Bill Anderson, a feature-length documentary chronicling Anderson’s extraordinary life, songwriting legacy, and unmatched impact on country music. The film is slated for release in early 2027.
As Anderson celebrates an unprecedented 65 years as a Grand Ole Opry member, Willard’s own silver anniversary serves as a testament to loyalty, dedication, and one of country music’s most enduring professional relationships. Together, the two have built a legacy defined not only by remarkable achievements, but by a friendship that has become family.
